VESCC Charity
Our Community supports those in need through: 1) Co
llections for the Archdiocese, 2) VESCC Ongoing Projects, and 3) Special Projects.
1. DIOCESAN COLLECTION
Over the course of the year, our Community takes Sunday collections for several Archdiocesan institutions: CARITAS, MISSIO (The Papal Mission Society) and Mothers in Need.
On at least three Sundays throughout the year (November, February, August) we hold special collections for Caritas. Caritas is the principal relief organization of the Catholic Church here in Austria. Its mission is not only organizing relief, but also increasing people’s awareness for the need and distress of the poor at home and around the world. Caritas comes to the relief of all regardless of religion, race, political persuasion or other ethnic differences.
The activities of CARITAS reach out to the old and sick, poor and homeless and in various international relief programmes in cases of natural disasters. Caritas operates extremely economically. The costs for organization never exceeds 5% of the funds raised for each relief programme. In other countries, Caritas always operates through local parishes to avoid unnecessary administration and to increase efficiency and reliability. Because of its large-scale programme and excellent reputation, Caritas can most often purchase foods, medicine, etc. at a fraction of the cost. Thus, one could say, a donation to Caritas counts double.
MISSIO not only comes to the aid of the needy, but furthers the work of the Church in areas of the world which are in need of assistance.
“Mothers in Need’ is the local Archdiocesan organisation which supports pregnant women and mothers in need of various kinds of assistance. Besides the annual collection on Mother’s Day, you can also bring new or used material items which could be used by pregnant women or mothers of children up to 2 years of age and Sunday to the Sacristy before or after Mass. We shall then deliver them for you to the nearby mothers in Need office.
